Litroam Back to the app

Privacy policy

Effective 5 September 2026 Applies to · Litroam for iOS & Android

The short version

01

Who we are

Litroam is made by Aarush Kanipakam — "we" and "us" throughout this policy. "The app" means the Litroam mobile app for iOS and Android, and we are the data controller for the information described here.

If you only want one thing from this page, it is this: the app is built so that the record of where you have walked stays on your phone.

02

What the app collects

Precise location
Latitude, longitude, accuracy, speed and heading from your device's GPS, while the app is open and — if you allow it — while it is in the background. Readings less accurate than 50 metres are discarded, as are ones implying an impossible speed.
Explored ground
The map cells you have entered, each stored with the real-world coordinates of its centre and the time you first reached it. This is the game's save file.
Your totals
Total distance walked, total area cleared, and your last known position so the map can open where you left it.
Places you search and route to
What you type into search, and the start and end points of any route you ask for. These are sent to Mapbox to be answered (see section 06) and are not kept by us.

The app does not ask for your contacts, photos, microphone, camera, calendar, health data or advertising identifier, and it has no social features.

03

Why it needs your location

Your location is the game. The entire map starts hidden under cloud, and physically being somewhere is the only thing that clears it — there is no button in the app that reveals map. Without location the app has nothing to do.

Where the law requires a legal basis: we process your location to deliver the service you asked for, on the basis of your consent, given through your device's permission prompt. You can withdraw it at any time in your phone's settings, and the app will keep working with the ground you have already cleared.

04

Background location, specifically

If you grant "Always" (iOS) or "Allow all the time" (Android), the app keeps reading your location while it is not on screen. This is what lets you put the phone in your pocket, walk, and find the cloud already burned off when you look again. It is the core of how the game works, not an extra.

On Android, background tracking runs as a foreground service, so a permanent notification tells you it is active. On iOS, the system shows its own location indicator. You can decline background access and still play with the app open, and you can downgrade the permission at any time.

05

Where your data lives

Cleared cells, totals and your last position are written to a database on your device, and that is the only copy unless and until you create an account and turn on sync (see section 07).

They are written the moment they happen rather than uploaded in a batch, which is why force-quitting the app mid-walk does not cost you the ground you took.

06

Mapbox

The app uses Mapbox to draw the map and to answer searches and route requests. Doing that necessarily sends data to Mapbox:

  • The area of the map you are looking at, so the tiles can be fetched.
  • The text you type into search, plus a rough location to bias results toward you.
  • The start and end coordinates of a route you request.

Mapbox is an independent company and handles that data under its own terms. Their privacy policy is at mapbox.com/legal/privacy. We do not send Mapbox your explored-ground history.

07

Accounts and cloud sync

Accounts and cloud backup are planned but not yet part of the app. When they arrive, they will be opt-in: you will have to create an account and turn sync on before anything leaves your device, and this policy will be updated to say exactly what is stored, where, and how to delete it, before that ships.

Until then, there is no account, no server-side copy of your map, and no way for us to see where you have been.

08

What we never do

  • We do not sell or rent your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising.
  • There are no advertising SDKs, no data brokers and no third-party trackers in the app.
  • We do not build an advertising or interest profile from where you go.
  • We do not share your location with other users. The app has no social or friend features.
09

How long we keep it

Your map is kept on your device for as long as you keep the app installed, because a map that forgets where you have been is not much of a map. Deleting the app deletes it. There is currently no server-side copy for us to retain.

10

Your controls

  • Turn tracking off — the app has an in-app tracking toggle, and you can revoke location access entirely in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services, or Android Settings → Location → App permissions.
  • Downgrade background access — set the permission to "While Using" instead of "Always" and the app will only clear ground while it is open.
  • Delete everything — uninstalling the app removes the on-device database and everything in it. This cannot be undone.
11

Your legal rights

Depending on where you live — including under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, the GDPR in the UK and EU, and the CCPA/CPRA in California — you may have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict or object to the processing of your personal information, to withdraw consent, to receive a portable copy, and not to be discriminated against for exercising any of it.

Because your map is held on your own device, you can already exercise most of these directly: the data is in your hands, and uninstalling erases it. If you want to make a formal request, or if account sync is live by the time you read this, write to us at the address in section 15 and we will respond within the time limit the law allows.

If you are in India, the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 applies. We are the Data Fiduciary for your information and you are the Data Principal: you can ask us to access, correct or erase it, and the address in section 15 is also where grievances go. If we do not resolve a grievance, you can escalate it to the Data Protection Board of India. If you are in the EEA or UK instead, you can complain to your national data protection authority.

This policy is governed by the law of India.

12

Children

Litroam is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has used the app and you would like it addressed, contact us and we will act on it.

A word to anyone: the game rewards walking outdoors. Please pay attention to traffic and your surroundings, and do not play it while driving.

13

Security

Data on your device is protected by your device: the app's database sits in the app's private storage, which the operating system keeps from other apps, and is covered by your device passcode and encryption. Requests to Mapbox travel over HTTPS.

No system is perfect, and a rooted or jailbroken device weakens these guarantees considerably.

14

Changes to this policy

If we change how the app handles your data — most likely when accounts and sync arrive — we will update this page and change the effective date at the top. If the change is significant, we will tell you in the app before it takes effect rather than quietly editing this page.
